State what stays compatible
Preserve what protects users. Diverge when a meaningful capability requires it, and make the boundary explicit.
Open systems engineering
Chroniton Labs is an open engineering lab building practical ways forward for distributed data and streaming systems.
01 / Why Chroniton
Mature infrastructure earns trust through stability. But important fixes and ideas can wait too long for a path to users. Chroniton Labs creates a focused proving ground where they can be built, measured, and shipped.
Our work stays open and compatibility-minded. AxonOps provides long-term stewardship; the direction is shaped in public with the engineers and operators who know these systems best. When our work builds on an Apache project, our intent is to contribute every change back upstream.
02 / Projects
Distributed database
A Cassandra-compatible database distribution focused on getting meaningful fixes and performance work into operators’ hands sooner.
Streaming platform
A Kafka-compatible message broker written in Rust, designed around high throughput, low latency, and cloud-native storage.
Developer tool
A fast, portable CQL shell with a rich terminal interface, cqlsh compatibility, and optional AI assistance.
Desktop application
A free, cross-platform Cassandra desktop environment for CQL development, query tracing, secure connections, and local clusters.
Engineering notes
A commit-by-commit look at the RustyRazorblade branches: direct I/O and JDK 21 for 5.0, then cursor-based compaction, repair, flush, and reads for 6.0.

Read our principlesPreserve what protects users. Diverge when a meaningful capability requires it, and make the boundary explicit.
Benchmark in the open. Explain the trade-offs. Let measurements guide the work.
Use our branches to prove the work, then contribute every change back to its source Apache project.
